Over the weekend, I attended a friend's birthday party. It was the usual affair—food, drink, Cards Against Humanity and a chaotic, hilarious round of King's Cup*, during which I pulled a Queen. Everyone's King's rules vary, but, in ours, a Queen means that you have to answer a question from everyone in the group. After explaining why I spell my name with lower case letters (it looks friendlier) and picking a single attribute of my beloved roommate to deem my favorite thing about her (she knows my thought process better than I do), the birthday girl raised her hand and turned to me to put her query forth. A preamble wherein she said many very nice (but somewhat exaggerated) things about me prepared me for the inevitable conclusion of her speech and, sure enough, she ended with a question I am continuously asked and completely unable to answer:
"Why don't you have a boyfriend?"
I wish this was a story about a funny one-off experience, but guys...I get asked this
all the frakkin time. And I don't just mean from well-meaning relatives hoping to marry me off. Actually, I don't think I've ever been asked that question by blood relations. Instead, it's from friends, acquaintances, my college RAs, co-workers, friend of friends, waiters. I wish I was making this up or speaking hyperbolically, but I'm really not. Usually it's part of a longer conversation that goes something like this:
me: [says something that indicates I am, in fact, single]
Person: Wait, you don't have a boyfriend?
me: Nope.
Person: Why not?
me: Uh...
Person: Because you seem like the kind of person who should have a boyfriend.
What on earth does that even mean? I think it's supposed to be a compliment, but it's a weird one. I even had one person to go so far as to describe to me what kind of boyfriend it was assumed I had—someone named something like Mike or Mark who made good money in a white collar job but who still had time to go to baseball games and walk his border collie with me. Thanks?
As far as I know, none of my other friends are posed such questions.** To cope with it, I've started compiling a list of reasons why I might be flying solo right now. To wit, I:
- consider raw ramen and straight peanut butter to be acceptable snacks and/or meals
- think ketchup is the devil and other condiments Lucifer's minions
- forget to take out the trash with impressive regularity***
- religiously watch 'Grey's Anatomy' but have yet to finish 'The Wire'
- am a terrible blanket hog
- sing all the time when I really, really shouldn't....ever
- am an English PhD candidate with only a basic understanding of grammar
- am slightly sartorially challenged
- name inanimate objects
- view velociraptors to be a legitimate threat
While all of these things are true (especially the raptors...if you don't have a comprehensive preparedness plan, I suggest you make that your new priority), that list is my way of saying, "Kids, I don't know." It could very well be because of my off-key musical narration of my daily activities, or, slightly more plausibly, it could just be it hasn't happened yet. And that could be for a million reasons. Does it bother me? Sometimes. But never more than when I have to try and explain it, as if it's a choice or because of something I have done to scare away potential suitors.
Thus, let it be known! There is no answer to this question. Let that be an end to the interrogation, however well-intentioned the enquirer may be.
....but, if you do happen to know a Mark or Mike with a border collie and a passion for the baseball diamond...feel free to give him my number.
*King's Cup is a game where you put a pack of cards face down on a table and take turns drawing them. Each number cards as a rule, usually (but not always) involving taking a drink.
**If I am wrong and there are some of you out there who have to navigate this peculiar little awkwardness, let me know! We can make T-shirts.
***Not sure this counts because division of household labor currently puts this in Red's column, but I'm trying to be honest.
